For some employers, the policy of lifelong employment is particularly important because it means that they can put money and effort into their staff training and make them loyal to the company. What they do is to select young people who have potential and who can be trained. They then give the young people the kinds of skills that will make them suitable employees for the company. In other words, they adjust their training to their particular needs.
One recently employed graduate says that she is receiving a great deal of valuable training from the company. “This means that I will be a loyal employee,” she says, “And it also means that the company will want to keep me. I am an important investment for them. So, the policy is a good one because it benefits both the employer and the employee.”
Recently, however, attitudes towards lifelong employment are beginning to change. Employees are slowly beginning to accept the idea that lifelong employment is not always in their best interest and that changing firms can have career advantages.

Tokyo is one of the most confusing cities in the world. Over 20 million people live and work in the Tokyo area, and many famous companies have their offices there. But most streets don’t have names. So how can you find your way in Tokyo?
Most people in Tokyo are very good at giving directions. They can usually explain how to get to their home or their office from the nearest train station. People often use maps when they give directions. Advertisements in newspapers or magazines, for example, usually have a small map to help you find the company. If you’re going to visit someone’s house, it’s a good idea to ask the person to draw, or fax you, a map of the local area. If you get lost, the best idea is to go to a police station. In Japan, each neighborhood has a small police station, and the police officers there have a map of all the buildings in the area. Giving directions is an important part of their job.

People today are still talking about the generation gap. Some parents complain that their children do not show them proper respect, while children complain that their parents do not understand them at all. What has gone wrong? Why has the generation gap appeared?
One important cause is that young people want to choose their own life style. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents like, and often to continue the family occupation.
Parents often expect their children to do better than they do, to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the high wishes that parents place on their children are another cause of the generation gap.
Finally, the high speed of social changes deepens the gap. In a traditional culture, people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society today the knowledge of a lifetime may be out of use overnight.

Telecommuting
It’s 8:30, time for John to start work. So, he turns on his radio. Then he eats breakfast. As he eats, he reads his e-mail and reviews his to-do list. Then he sits on the sofa and thinks about an article he needs to write… Wait a minute! Radio? Breakfast? Sofa? What kind of workplace is this? Well, actually it is John’s house, and he is a telecommuter---he works at home, communicating with the workplace through the Internet.
Like John, millions of people --- and their employers --- are finding that telecommuting is a great way to work.
Telecommuters can follow their own schedules. They work in the comfort of their homes, where they can also look after young children or elderly parents. They save time and money by not traveling to work. Their employers save, too, because they need less office space and furniture. Studies show that telecommuters change jobs less often. This saves employers even more money. Telecommuting helps society, too, by reducing pollution and traffic problems.
Jobs that are suited to telecommuting include writing, design work, computer programming and accounting. If a job involves working with information, a telecommuter can probably do it.

My First Impression of College Life
My initial weeks in college have left me with a vivid impression, primarily defined by two striking aspects: newfound independence and the diverse community.
Unlike high school, where schedules were strictly mapped out, college grants me the freedom to manage my own time. I decide when to study, relax, or participate in club activities. This liberty is both exhilarating and challenging, teaching me the crucial skills of self-discipline.
The most profound impression, however, comes from the people. My classmates hail from various regions, each bringing unique cultural differences and life stories. During a late-night discussion in my dorm, we shared our dreams and perspectives, which broadened my horizons immensely.
In short, college life has greeted me not just with academic opportunities, but with the gift of freedom and the beauty of diversity. It is an inspiring journey of self-discovery and connection.

A New Friend in College
Among the many new faces, Leo has become a cherished friend. Our friendship began not in a classroom, but in the campus library.
One evening, I was struggling with a difficult physics problem. Seeing my frustration, Leo, who was sitting across from me, offered help. He patiently explained the concept with such clarity that the solution suddenly seemed simple. We started talking and discovered a shared passion for science fiction and badminton.
What truly cemented our friendship, however, is his genuinely positive and supportive nature. He is always the first to encourage me when I face challenges and is genuinely happy for my achievements.
Therefore, we became friends not just because of common interests, but because of his kindness and the sincere support we offer each other, making the journey through college much warmer and more enjoyable.

A Foreign Culture I Would Like to Experience
The culture I am most eager to experience is that of Italy, a country renowned for its rich historical legacy and passionate way of life.
What attracts me most is the Italian philosophy of "la dolce vita" — the sweet life. I would love to witness its magnificent ancient ruins and Renaissance art, feeling the weight of history in cities like Rome and Florence. More importantly, I want to immerse myself in the local lifestyle: sharing laughter over a leisurely meal in a family-run trattoria, learning the hand gestures that accompany conversations, and hearing opera in an open-air piazza. The Italian emphasis on family, food, and enjoying the present moment is something I find deeply appealing.
I believe experiencing Italian culture would teach me to appreciate beauty in everyday life and remind me of the importance of passion and connection, making my own life richer and more vibrant.

The Biggest Difficulty in Learning English
The most significant difficulty I have encountered in learning English is achieving spontaneous speaking fluency. While I can comprehend written texts and handle structured writing tasks, converting my thoughts into smooth, real-time conversation remains a formidable hurdle.
This difficulty primarily stems from the mental gap between knowing a word and retrieving it instantly during dialogue. To tackle this, I have implemented a two-pronged approach. Firstly, I engage in daily shadowing exercises, repeating sentences from English audio-books and news reports to improve my muscle memory and intonation. Secondly, I force myself into speaking situations: I partnered with a classmate for weekly English-only coffee chats, creating a safe space to make mistakes and build confidence.
Through these consistent efforts, my mental block is slowly dissolving. Confronting this difficulty has taught me that language acquisition requires not just knowledge, but also the development of a quick, responsive instinct for communication.
